Cult Violence and Criminal Attacks Escalate in Anambra: Over 20 Dead as Security Forces Struggle to Contain Crisis

Anambra State is grappling with a surge of violence, as deadly cult clashes and criminal activities leave over 20 people dead in recent weeks. On Sunday, October 20, 2024, at least seven people were brutally killed in Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area, in what authorities suspect was a cult-related attack. Eyewitnesses reported that armed hoodlums opened fire on unsuspecting victims. Videos shared online showed bodies of the victims, although the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed.

In response, Anambra State Police have deployed additional officers to restore order. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, urged witnesses to come forward with information, promising confidentiality to anyone who can help identify the perpetrators.

This incident coincides with another attack in the same area during the annual New Yam festival. Gunmen stormed a bar near Oye Nwochichi Market, killing eight people instantly before proceeding to a second location near Eke Nibo Market, where more lives were lost. In total, 13 people were killed in the festival-day attacks, adding to the growing list of cult-related killings that have gripped the region.

Nodu-Okpuno, another nearby community, has also seen a rise in violence, with three people killed in recent days. Since April 2024, over 20 people have reportedly died in clashes between rival cult groups, fueling fear and panic among residents. These violent episodes are particularly alarming given their proximity to the Governor’s Lodge and the Anambra State Police headquarters.

Despite efforts by the state government and security forces, the violence persists. Kidnappings, armed attacks, and other forms of criminal activity have disrupted life across Anambra, especially in border communities like Ihiala. Local residents report living in constant fear, as criminals operate with impunity.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo, who made security a priority upon taking office in 2022, has repeatedly called for dialogue with armed groups, urging them to embrace peace and rehabilitation. However, the violence has only escalated, with reports of police officers, community leaders, and innocent civilians falling victim to these attacks.

The state government continues to push for intelligence-based security operations, while the police encourage community collaboration in reporting criminal activities. Nevertheless, many residents feel abandoned, as cultists and armed gangs wreak havoc, undermining peace and security across the state.
