The Nigerian Police have declared British national Andrew Wynne wanted over allegations of plotting to destabilize President Bola Tinubu’s administration by sponsoring recent anti-government protests. Wynne, also known as Andrew Povich or Drew Povey, is accused of financing the #EndBadGovernance protests held from August 1 to 10, 2024, aimed at undermining Nigeria’s democratically elected government.
According to ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force, Wynne fled Nigeria as investigations began. He and his local coordinator, Lucky Ehis Obiyan, are now the subjects of an international manhunt. The police allege that Wynne set up operations under the guise of businesses like ‘Iva Valley Bookshop’ and ‘STARS of Nations Schools’ in Abuja, which served as fronts for his subversive activities.
“Investigations revealed Wynne built a network of sleeper cells and issued directives to local operatives to orchestrate violent protests,” Adejobi said. “These activities were aimed at destabilizing the country and creating a justification for an unconstitutional regime change.”
Nine other suspects linked to Wynne have been arrested and charged with offenses including terrorism financing, treasonable felony, and subversion. The police allege that Wynne provided substantial financial and operational support to these suspects, directing them to provoke unrest and violent confrontations with security forces to incite international condemnation of the Nigerian government.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has activated INTERPOL and other global policing networks to assist in locating Wynne. He warned that any individual or group found plotting against the nation’s security or promoting movements aimed at overthrowing the government would face the full force of the law.
“The Nigerian Police Force is committed to protecting the country’s democracy and will leave no stone unturned in bringing those responsible to justice,” Egbetokun stated, urging the public to be wary of groups exploiting legitimate protests for illegal and harmful agendas.
