Renowned Islamic singer, Alhaja Rukayat Gawat-Oyefeso, has tragically passed away. Known for her soulful voice and deeply spiritual songs, she was a beloved figure within the Muslim community in Nigeria. Her music inspired many, leaving a lasting impact on Islamic religious songs.
Rukayat’s death was confirmed by her brother, Jubril Gawat, who serves as the Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He shared the sorrowful news on social media with the Quranic verse, “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return” (Quran 2:156), prompting an outpouring of condolences from the public and prominent figures.
Rukayat Gawat was also the daughter of Alhaji Rasaq Aremu Gawat, a prominent Islamic broadcaster who mysteriously disappeared in 2012, a loss that has never been resolved. In previous interviews, she shared how the mystery of her father’s disappearance motivated her perseverance and dedication to her music.
Rukayat, who was married to Alhaji Shakiri Oyefeso, will be buried following Islamic rites. Her death has sent shockwaves through the Islamic music community, with fans and colleagues expressing their grief and offering prayers for her soul. Many have prayed for her eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus, a reflection of her lasting spiritual legacy.
