Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, has stepped down from his role, citing urgent family medical matters. In a statement released on Saturday, Ngelale announced that he would be proceeding on an indefinite leave of absence, effective immediately, to focus on addressing the health challenges affecting his immediate family.
Ngelale, who also served as the Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action and Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen, expressed the difficulty of his decision. “While I fully appreciate that the ship of state waits for no man, this agonizing decision… was taken after significant consultations with my family over the past several days as a vexatious medical situation has worsened at home,” he said.
Appointed on July 31, 2023, Ngelale’s tenure as Tinubu’s spokesman faced challenges, including controversies over statements his office released. Despite these issues, he was regarded as a capable and dedicated public servant, having previously served under President Muhammadu Buhari.
Ngelale’s departure comes after only a few months in the role, during which he also took on additional responsibilities, such as his appointment as the first Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action in May 2024. He expressed a desire to return to national service when his family’s situation improves and asked for privacy during this time.
Rumors surrounding his resignation suggest internal conflicts and pressures from within the administration, with sources indicating that some close to the President were unhappy with his appointment. Despite these speculations, Ngelale has chosen to focus on his family during this challenging period.
