Residents of Mpape, a suburb of Abuja, were thrown into panic after three consecutive days of earth tremors, leading the government to suspend mining activities in the area. The tremors, which began on September 13th, shook buildings and caused widespread fear in the densely populated community, which is situated near the upscale Maitama district.
The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) confirmed that the tremors, though unsettling, pose no immediate threat. Over 48 minor seismic events were recorded, with increasing frequency and intensity. The tremors are believed to result from accumulated stress along fault lines near Mpape and Katampe.
While some residents likened the tremors to explosions, officials assured the public that the quakes were of low magnitude, ranging from III to IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale, and unlikely to cause significant damage. The government has suspended mining operations as a precautionary measure while geologists continue to assess the situation.
NGSA urged residents to remain calm, emphasizing that the tremors are being closely monitored in real time.
