Abia State has announced that its Abia Industrial Innovation Park (AIIP) modular refinery is set to commence operations in 2025, according to the commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu. The refinery aims to boost the state’s revenue and provide numerous job opportunities for the residents. Kanu emphasized that the project is crucial for the government, offering both direct and indirect jobs, with an expected 2,000 direct jobs and additional opportunities for young people in Abia. He highlighted the significance of the refinery in meeting the state’s energy needs and contributing to its economic growth. The move comes in the wake of the Dangote Refinery’s commencement of operations, marking a positive trend in Nigeria’s refining sector.
Moreover, Kanu noted that numerous investors, especially in the petroleum industry, have shown interest in establishing operations in Abia, supporting the government’s efforts to increase job opportunities. The commissioner emphasized the state’s readiness to tap into its petroleum and mineral resources. The development aligns with the broader trend of refinery operations in Nigeria, with the Port Harcourt refinery recently starting operations as well, meeting the federal government’s commitment to commence activities in December 2023.
