Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for civil servants, with payments starting at the end of October 2024. This move is aimed at improving the welfare of workers across the state.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, following a State Executive Council meeting. Kanu highlighted Governor Otti’s commitment to supporting workers, stating, “The governor has approved the payment of the N70,000 minimum wage, and disbursement will begin within the next few days.”
The Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, confirmed the decision, underscoring that Abia State is exceeding the national minimum wage benchmark to better serve its workforce.
In addition to the wage increase, the state government has approved nine new road projects across the three senatorial zones, aimed at improving infrastructure. The ongoing “Clean Up Abia Initiative,” which has significantly improved sanitation in key cities like Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia, was also praised during the briefing. Abia’s efforts in environmental management have gained international recognition, earning an invitation from the United Nations Habitat to present at a global conference in Egypt.
This wage approval and development projects reflect Governor Otti’s dedication to enhancing both worker welfare and infrastructure in Abia State.
