Professor Godwin Emezue, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration of Abia State University (ABSU), has regained his freedom after being held captive for 11 days. He was abducted on January 26, 2024, from a fueling station in Umuahia North LGA, Abia State.
Reports indicate that Prof. Emezue was released on Tuesday night following the payment of a ransom of 25 million Naira by his family. Initially, the kidnappers demanded 35 million Naira, but the family managed to negotiate and pay 5 million Naira.
During his captivity, the kidnappers threatened to harm Prof. Emezue if the family did not pay an additional 20 million Naira by Saturday. Fearing for his life, the family raised the required amount and handed it over to the kidnappers, who warned against involving security agencies.
Later, the kidnappers demanded an extra 5 million Naira, claiming they were instructed to harm the professor but might spare him for the New Year. With the support of his friends and the Abia State University community, the family raised the additional funds and sent them to the kidnappers.
The release of Prof. Emezue brings relief to his family and colleagues, but the incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in the region.
