In the new Netflix rom-com “A Family Affair,” Zac Efron plays Chris Cole, who is both the boss and boyfriend of Joey King’s character’s mother, played by Nicole Kidman. The film mixes laughs with deeper themes of grief, insecurities, and relationship growth.
Joey King describes an awkward scene where her character, Zara, walks in on her boss and her mother, adding to the comedic and dramatic tension of the film. Despite the awkward on-screen moments, Zac and Joey enjoyed making the film, noting the fun and laughter on set.
Zac Efron previously worked with Nicole Kidman on the movie “The Paperboy” 12 years ago. He felt comfortable working with her again, describing their professional relationship as safe and exciting.
Joey King mentioned that, unlike her character, she has never had an assistant in real life but feels prepared for the role due to growing up with older sisters.
“A Family Affair” also stars Kathy Bates and Liza Koshy and is now streaming on Netflix.
Review: ‘A Family Affair’ is a Mixed Bag
“A Family Affair” stars Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, and Joey King in a story with all the elements of a classic romantic comedy. However, despite its promising setup, the film falls short in execution.
Directed by Richard LaGravenese of “PS I Love You” fame, the movie follows Chris Cole (Zac Efron), a self-absorbed movie star disconnected from reality. His assistant, Zara (Joey King), dislikes him for his obnoxious behavior. The plot thickens when Chris begins a romantic relationship with Zara’s mother, Brooke (Nicole Kidman), leading to tension and conflict.
While the film explores themes of stardom, loneliness, and family dynamics, it remains surface-level and lacks depth. Zac Efron’s charisma makes his character watchable, but the movie fails to develop its characters convincingly.
Despite its shortcomings, “A Family Affair” offers moments of humor and charm, making it a light watch for fans of the genre.
