Justin Johnson, convicted of murdering Memphis rapper Young Dolph, has been sentenced to an additional 50 years in prison. On Friday, Judge Jennifer Mitchell sentenced Johnson to 35 years for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and another 15 years for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. These sentences are to be served concurrently with his life sentence for first-degree murder, handed down earlier.
Young Dolph, known for his influential presence in the rap community, was shot and killed on November 17, 2021, at Makeda’s Homemade Butter Cookies in Memphis. Two masked gunmen opened fire on him as he entered the store.
In court, Dolph’s family read a statement describing the pain of losing him and condemning Johnson’s actions as driven by “jealousy and cowardice.”
Johnson’s attorneys recently filed a motion seeking to vacate his conviction, citing insufficient evidence and issues with the court’s handling of certain photographic evidence. However, with the new sentencing, Johnson’s prison term extends well into his later years, effectively ensuring he will remain incarcerated.
