South African singer Tyla achieved a historic moment by winning the inaugural Best African Music Performance award at the 2024 Grammys for her hit single “Water.”
Tyla triumphed over strong competition from Nigerian artists Davido, Asake, and Burna Boy in this newly introduced category. Her song ‘Water’ outshone tracks like Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’
The Grammy, presented at the 66th Grammy Award Premiere Ceremony in Los Angeles, marked a significant milestone for Tyla, who expressed her surprise and gratitude in her acceptance speech. At just 22 years old, she acknowledged the importance of the Recording Academy introducing this category.
Tyla’s ‘Water’ not only made waves in Africa but also achieved international success by entering the top 10 charts in 16 countries, including the UK and the US. The Best African Music Performance category, introduced this year, reflects the Grammys’ commitment to recognizing diverse musical talents worldwide.
