Sérgio Mendes, Iconic Bossa Nova Pioneer, Dies at 83 After Battling Long COVID

Sérgio Mendes, the legendary Brazilian musician who introduced the world to the vibrant rhythms of bossa nova and samba, passed away at the age of 83 in Los Angeles. Mendes, who had been battling long COVID, died peacefully, surrounded by his wife of 54 years, Gracinha Leporace, and their children, his family confirmed.

Mendes was instrumental in bringing the sounds of Brazil to global audiences, with his hit song “Mas Que Nada” becoming an international anthem in the 1960s. As the leader of the band Brasil ’66, he captivated listeners with his unique blend of Brazilian rhythms and Western pop, covering classics like “The Look of Love” and The Beatles’ “The Fool On The Hill.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Mendes recorded over 35 albums, many of which achieved gold or platinum status. He was a multiple Grammy Award winner, including Best World Music Album for Brasileiro, and received an Oscar nomination in 2012 for his song “Real in Rio” from the animated film Rio.

Mendes’s influence extended well into the 21st century, collaborating with modern artists such as the Black Eyed Peas, Stevie Wonder, and Justin Timberlake. His 2006 album Timeless, produced by will.i.am, introduced his music to a new generation, with a reimagined version of “Mas Que Nada” topping charts in the U.S.

Even as he battled health challenges, Mendes continued to perform to sold-out audiences, with his last concerts in late 2023 in Paris, London, and Barcelona. Known for his joyful and celebratory approach to music, Mendes once said, “When I think about Brazilian music, the first words that come to mind are joy, celebration, and party.”

Mendes leaves behind a rich legacy that spans more than six decades, forever shaping the landscape of world music. He is survived by his wife, Gracinha Leporace, and their five children.
