A Lagos Chief Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of Ganiyu Oyedepo, also known as Koko Zaria, a senior figure in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), following allegations of assaulting veteran Nollywood actor Alhaji Ade Adele, popularly known as Baba Lawori.
The incident, which took place on June 5, 2024, in Idimu, Lagos, reportedly involved Oyedepo and his associates attacking Baba Lawori, causing injuries with a broken bottle. The charges against Oyedepo include conspiracy, assault occasioning harm, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
Baba Lawori publicly appealed for help on social media after the attack, prompting the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, to reassure the public that justice would be served.
During the court hearing, Chief Magistrate B. Sonuga remanded Oyedepo in custody after he pleaded not guilty to the charges. The prosecutor, Morufu Animashaun, representing the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), stated that Oyedepo’s actions violated several sections of the Lagos State Criminal Law.
Oyedepo’s defense team, led by S. Bello and S. O. Ajetomobi, sought bail, arguing that the charges were bailable. The court granted bail at N2 million, with two sureties who must provide proof of employment, residency within the court’s jurisdiction, and evidence of three years’ tax payments.
Chief Magistrate Sonuga adjourned the case to October 29, 2024, for further proceedings, ordering that Oyedepo remain in custody until his bail conditions are fulfilled.
