Nigerian police have taken legal action against Onyeabuchi Okafo, son of popular comic actor Mr Ibu, and his lover Jasmine Okekeagwu, accusing them of embezzling N50 million ($110,000) earmarked for Mr Ibu’s medical treatment. The funds were initially raised through a public initiative to support the actor, who underwent medical procedures and had one of his legs amputated due to a prolonged illness.
The arrest followed a petition from Mr Ibu’s wife, Stella Maris Okafor, prompting the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex to recover N50 million from the hacked bank account. The investigation revealed that Okafo and Okekeagwu manipulated Mrs. Stella Maris Okafor, gaining unauthorized access to Mr Ibu’s phone and initiating fraudulent transfers.
The suspects allegedly wiped off the original mobile banking applications and installed new ones, leading to the criminal transfer of N55 million. Forensic analysis traced the stolen funds to Onyebuchi Okafor’s account, with N50 million successfully recovered.
Jasmine Okekeagwu and Onyebuchi Okafor were charged with conspiracy and stealing, facing allegations of planning to escape to the UK with their ill-gotten gains. They have been granted bail but are scheduled to appear in court on March 11, 2024. The case file has been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
The arrest has sparked public interest, shedding light on the unfortunate misappropriation of funds intended for Mr Ibu’s medical bills.
