Margaret Gardiner, who broke barriers as the first South African to win the Miss Universe crown in 1978, is set to return to Mexico City this November to serve as a judge for the 2024 Miss Universe pageant. Gardiner, crowned at age 18, has built a successful career as a journalist and advocate for women’s rights. Now 65, she joins the panel to help select a new generation of titleholders, bringing with her decades of experience and a commitment to empowerment.
Gardiner expressed excitement for her new role, reflecting on how pageants have evolved to value intellect, diversity, and inner qualities. “Beauty is about the mind, body, and soul working together,” she explained, encouraging contestants to be authentic and confident. She offered practical advice to participants: “Smiling and genuine answers will make you stand out. Be yourself, connect, and have fun.”
Known for her elegance and insight, Gardiner has influenced the beauty world while addressing social issues and the challenges faced by women. She is set to release her new book, Damaged Beauty: Joey Superstar, early next year, a work exploring the hidden struggles many women experience.
The 73rd Miss Universe pageant will take place on November 16, 2024, in Mexico City, bringing Gardiner full circle to the country where she was first crowned.
