Michael J. Fox, famed for his role in “Back to the Future,” made a surprise appearance with Coldplay at the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England. The 63-year-old retired actor, who has been a dedicated Parkinson’s disease activist since his diagnosis at 29, joined the band onstage in his wheelchair to play guitar during “Humankind” and “Fix You.”
Frontman Chris Martin credited Fox’s iconic performance as Marty McFly for inspiring the formation of Coldplay. “The main reason we’re in a band is because of watching ‘Back to the Future,’” Martin said, calling Fox their hero. During the set, Martin also referenced the movie by singing, “Go, Johnny, go, go, go,” a nod to McFly’s performance of Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode.”
Fox previously performed with Coldplay in 2016 in New York. He retired from acting in 2020 due to Parkinson’s progression but continues to lead the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which he founded in 2000 to find a cure for the disease.
