A Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has granted an order for substituted service on key witnesses in the ongoing inquest into the death of popular singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad. The court directed that witness summonses be served via a reputable national newspaper and social media to ensure the prompt attendance of these witnesses.
The witnesses include prominent figures such as Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, and Samson Eletu, also known as Sam Larry. Other individuals summoned to testify are Mohbad’s sister-in-law, Karimot Ogunbayo, his lawyer Oluwasanmi Falade, and the nurse who reportedly treated him before his death, Feyisayo Ogedengbe. The court also summoned the driver, Fidelis Esanbor, who transported Mohbad to the hospital.
This order was issued after Magistrate T.A. Sotobi approved an application by Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, during a court session on August 16, 2024. The Aloba family’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Wahab Shittu, argued for the inclusion of these new witnesses to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death on September 12, 2023.
The court also agreed to recall Mohbad’s wife, Wunmi, and the Investigating Police Officer, ASP Muhammad Yusuf, for further testimony to clarify previous statements.
Mohbad’s death at the age of 27 has sparked widespread controversy, particularly due to his association with Marlian Music, a record label owned by Naira Marley, which he left in 2022. Following Mohbad’s death, the Lagos State Police launched a special investigation team, leading to the arrests of Naira Marley and Sam Larry. An autopsy was conducted after Mohbad’s body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, in an effort to determine the cause of his death.
