Kehinde Bankole on Playing Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti: A Powerful Reminder of Women's Unity

Acclaimed Nigerian actress Kehinde Bankole has described her portrayal of legendary activist Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti as a powerful experience that highlights the strength of women when they unite.

Bankole’s performance in the biopic directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters has received critical acclaim, winning several awards, including Best Overall Feature Film at the 2023 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) and Best Lead Actress at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA).

“Playing Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was not just about portraying an incredible woman, but about witnessing the strength that comes from women uniting. Funmilayo understood this deeply and through the Abeokuta Women’s Union (AWU), she built a force for change,” said Bankole.

She emphasized the importance of collective action and the impact of women standing together regardless of age, differences, or social standing. “Imagine the world we could create if we truly amplified each other’s voices, shared resources, and fought for equality as one. Funmilayo’s legacy serves as a powerful reminder and motivator to keep moving forward towards that future,” she added.

Bankole also reflected on her experience working with a talented cast including Joke Silva, Adunni Ade, and others. “It was remarkable to act alongside such talented actresses. Working together on this project has reminded me of the boundless potential we possess when we unite our talents and voices.”

Bankole concluded by expressing her gratitude for being part of a project that has inspired many women and rekindled the fight for justice. “The impact the film has had since its release has been incredible. Hearing stories of women inspired by Funmilayo’s story is what makes this project so special. It’s a testament to her enduring legacy and reminds me to write my own history.”
