John Amos, the Emmy-nominated actor best known for his role as James Evans Sr. in the iconic sitcom Good Times and for portraying the older Kunta Kinte in Roots, passed away at 84 on August 21, in Los Angeles due to natural causes. His son, Kelly Christopher Amos, shared the news, honoring his father’s legacy as a kind-hearted man and a beloved figure worldwide.

Amos’s portrayal of James Evans Sr., the strong and steadfast father of an African-American family in the inner-city of Chicago, resonated deeply with audiences during the show’s run from 1974 to 1979. Good Times was the first sitcom to center on a Black family, and Amos’s role solidified his place as one of TV’s most beloved fathers. Although his character was written off after three seasons due to creative disputes over the stereotypical portrayal of his TV son, J.J., played by Jimmie Walker, Amos’s impact on the show and its viewers was indelible.

Amos’s versatility as an actor was further showcased in Roots, the groundbreaking 1977 miniseries based on Alex Haley’s novel. His portrayal of the older Kunta Kinte earned him critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination, marking another milestone in his distinguished career.

Beyond Good Times and Roots, Amos appeared in numerous other TV shows, including The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where he played the memorable role of weatherman Gordy Howard, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, where he played Will Smith’s stepfather. He also had a recurring role on The West Wing as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace.

Amos’s big-screen appearances included roles in films such as Coming to America, Die Hard 2, and Let’s Do It Again. His long career reflected his commitment to portraying diverse characters with depth and integrity.

In his later years, Amos reflected fondly on his career and the enduring connection he had with fans. He often recounted how people would tell him that he had been the father figure they never had. This bond with viewers, particularly those who grew up watching him on Good Times, solidified his place as “America’s Dad.”

John Amos is survived by his two children, K.C. and Shannon Amos. His legacy as a trailblazing actor and cherished TV father will continue to inspire and resonate with audiences for generations to come.
