Jack Russell, Great White Frontman and Survivor of Infamous Nightclub Fire, Dies at 63

Jack Russell, the dynamic lead singer of the 1980s rock band Great White, passed away on August 7 at the age of 63. He died peacefully at a relative’s home in Southern California, surrounded by family. The cause of death was Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy, as confirmed by K.L. Doty, the author of his autobiography.

Russell’s voice defined Great White, a band that achieved major success in the late 1980s with hits like “Rock Me” and “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.” The latter became their biggest hit, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989 and earning the band a Grammy nomination.

Tragically, Russell’s career was forever marked by the 2003 fire at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island. While performing with his spinoff group, Jack Russell’s Great White, the band’s pyrotechnics ignited a blaze that claimed 100 lives and injured over 200 others, including the loss of the band’s guitarist. The fire became one of the deadliest nightclub disasters in U.S. history. Although Russell was not legally charged, the tragedy deeply affected him and cast a shadow over his subsequent career.

Despite the challenges, Russell continued to perform and make music. In July 2024, he announced his retirement due to his declining health, expressing deep gratitude to his fans for their support throughout his career.

“Words cannot express my gratitude for the many years of memories, love, and support,” Russell wrote in his farewell Instagram post. “You have made my life a wonder.”

Born on December 5, 1960, in Montebello, California, Jack Russell grew up in Whittier and left high school to pursue his passion for music. His journey from small clubs to rock stardom made him a beloved figure in the rock community.

Russell is survived by his wife, Heather Ann Russell, his son, Matthew Hucko, and many other family members and friends who cherish his humor, passion for life, and lasting impact on rock and roll.
