Gena Rowlands, the beloved actress known for her iconic role as Allie in “The Notebook,” has passed away at the age of 94. She died peacefully on Wednesday at her home in Indian Wells, California, surrounded by her family, including her husband Robert and her daughter Alexandra Cassavetes. Her son, director Nick Cassavetes, had also been by her side in her final days.
Rowlands, a celebrated figure in Hollywood, had been battling Alzheimer’s disease, a diagnosis her son publicly revealed in June, marking the 20th anniversary of “The Notebook.” In a poignant twist, her character in the film also struggled with the disease, mirroring her own real-life battle.
Rowlands’ illustrious career spanned several decades, earning her four Emmy Awards, two Golden Globes, and two Oscar nominations. She was particularly known for her collaborations with her first husband, filmmaker John Cassavetes, in films like “A Woman Under the Influence” and “Gloria,” both of which garnered her Academy Award nominations.
Born in Wisconsin, Rowlands began her career on Broadway before transitioning to film and television. She was honored with an honorary Academy Award in 2015, shortly before retiring from acting.
In addition to “The Notebook,” Rowlands left an indelible mark with performances in films such as “Faces,” “Opening Night,” “Unhook the Stars,” and “Hope Floats.”
Rowlands is survived by her husband Robert and her three children, Nick, Alexandra, and Zoe Cassavetes. Her legacy as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and powerful actresses will continue to inspire generations.
