Eric Roberts has issued a heartfelt apology to his sister, Julia Roberts, in his newly released memoir Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far. The Runaway Train actor opened up about their long-standing feud and his regrets over remarks that contributed to their strained relationship.
In the book, Eric addresses a past comment where he claimed credit for Julia’s and his daughter Emma Roberts’ acting success, stating, “If it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts.” Now, at 68, Eric admits this was a mistake, writing, “I hope Julia will accept this public apology. It was an asinine thing to have said.”
The memoir delves into the Roberts family’s difficult past, highlighting a turbulent childhood and the challenges that followed. Eric speaks openly about his struggles with drug addiction, which strained his relationships with both Julia and his daughter, Emma. His addiction led to a custody battle over Emma, during which Julia supported Emma’s mother, further deepening the rift between the siblings.
Eric candidly reflects on how his actions affected those closest to him, admitting it was “dangerous to be around me” during the height of his addiction. He acknowledges that losing custody of Emma was the biggest consequence of his behavior.
Despite the past, Eric expresses his desire to heal and move forward, writing, “I imagine I will remain as Julia’s brother and Emma Roberts’ dad for the rest of my life. I’d like to make good on that, to move aside proudly and with grace. That’s part of the reason for writing the book.”
Eric’s memoir offers a rare, introspective glimpse into his personal and professional journey, underscoring his hope for reconciliation and peace within his family.
