Drake Hogestyn, the beloved actor who portrayed John Black on Days of Our Lives for nearly four decades, passed away on September 28, 2024, just one day before his 71st birthday. He succumbed to pancreatic cancer after a valiant fight, surrounded by his family.
Hogestyn’s family announced his passing in a heartfelt statement: “With heavy hearts, we share that Drake faced the greatest challenge of his life with incredible strength and grace. He passed peacefully with loved ones by his side.”
Hogestyn joined Days of Our Lives in 1986 and quickly became a fan favorite, playing the mysterious and heroic John Black, a character central to many of the show’s most dramatic storylines. His on-screen relationship with Marlena Evans, played by Deidre Hall, became one of the most iconic pairings in soap opera history, earning them legions of devoted fans.
Executive producer Ken Corday said, “Drake’s impact on Days of Our Lives is unmatched. His professionalism, dedication, and love for the show and its fans will never be forgotten.”
Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Hogestyn initially pursued a career in professional baseball before an injury led him to acting. In addition to Days of Our Lives, he appeared in the CBS series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and several TV movies. However, it was his portrayal of John Black that defined his career.
Hogestyn’s personal life was as full as his professional one. He married his childhood sweetheart, Victoria Post, in 1986, and together they raised four children—daughters Whitney, Alexandra, and Rachael, and son Ben. The couple also shared seven grandchildren.
Hogestyn’s co-stars and friends paid tribute on social media, with Alison Sweeney calling him “an incredible man” and “a huge part of Days.” Kristian Alfonso remembered him as “a loving father, husband, and dear friend,” while Christopher Sean, who played his on-screen son, expressed, “You were more than my TV father—you were my dad.”
Drake Hogestyn will be remembered not only as a soap opera legend but also as a kind and generous soul who left an indelible mark on the world, both on and off-screen.
