Legendary actor Daniel Day-Lewis is making a highly anticipated return to the screen after seven years of retirement. The three-time Oscar winner will star in Anemone, the directorial debut of his son, Ronan Day-Lewis. The film, co-written by the father-son duo, explores the complex dynamics of familial bonds, focusing on the intricate relationships between fathers, sons, and brothers.

The British actor, now 67, stepped away from acting in 2017 following his acclaimed performance in Phantom Thread. Day-Lewis, known for his intense method acting and transformative performances, remained largely out of the public eye during his retirement. His return has generated excitement across the film industry.

Anemone boasts a strong cast, including Sean Bean, Samantha Morton, Samuel Bottomley, and Safia Oakley-Green. The film is being produced by Focus Features and Plan B, and is currently filming in Manchester.

Ronan Day-Lewis, 26, is a painter making his first foray into filmmaking with Anemone. The film reunites his father with Focus Features, the studio behind Phantom Thread. Ben Fordesman (Love Lies Bleeding) will serve as director of photography, while Jane Petrie (The Crown) will handle costume design, and Chris Oddy (Zone of Interest) is the production designer.

Day-Lewis’s decision to retire from acting in 2017 came as a surprise, with the actor stating at the time that it was a private choice, made without a specific reason. In a rare reflection on his retirement, he admitted the impulse to quit acting became a compulsion. However, his return with Anemone signals a new chapter for the actor, who has long been considered one of the greatest of his generation.

Rumors of his return began circulating earlier this year when he presented an award to director Martin Scorsese, his collaborator on Gangs of New York and The Age of Innocence. Scorsese hinted at the possibility of working with Day-Lewis again, calling their past collaborations “one of the greatest joys” of his life.

Fans of Day-Lewis are eager to see the actor return to the screen, and Anemone promises to be a deeply personal project that brings together two generations of the Day-Lewis family. The film is set to be released internationally by Universal.
