The Federal High Court in Lagos has struck out charges against celebrity bartender Pascal Okechukwu, known as Cubana Chief Priest, concerning alleged abuse of the Naira. This decision came after parties adopted terms of settlement.
Okechukwu was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on April 17, 2024, for allegedly spraying and tampering with Naira notes at a social event. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail for ₦10 million.
On June 25, 2024, EFCC prosecutor Bilikisu Buhari and defense counsel Chikaosolu Ojukwu informed the court of the settlement, which included Okechukwu forfeiting ₦10 million to the Federal Government and agreeing to campaign against Naira abuse.
The court ruled to dismiss the charges, with Okechukwu required to enter a bond with the EFCC to maintain good behavior, conduct regular campaigns against Naira abuse, and post bi-monthly videos on social media promoting this campaign. This agreement is in line with Section 14(2) of the EFCC Act.
