Connie Chiume, Iconic South African and Black Panther Actress, Passes Away at 72

Connie Chiume, the esteemed South African actress best known for her role in Marvel’s Black Panther, passed away at the age of 72 on August 6, 2024, at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg. Chiume’s family confirmed her passing in a heartfelt statement, requesting privacy as they mourn her loss.

“The Chiume family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed, award-winning actress Connie Chiume. We ask for privacy during this difficult time and will share further details in due course,” the family announced.

Chiume’s illustrious career spanned over several decades, during which she became a beloved figure in South African television and film. She starred in iconic TV shows such as Rhythm City, Zone 14, and Yizo Yizo, earning critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase. Internationally, she gained widespread recognition for her portrayal of Zawavari, a member of the Wakandan Tribal Council, in Black Panther and its sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Born in Welkom, Free State province, to a Malawian father and a Zulu mother, Chiume originally trained as a teacher before transitioning to acting. Her talent and versatility quickly made her a household name, and she received numerous awards throughout her career, including the NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress and a South African Film and Television Award (SAFTA) for Best Supporting Actress.

Tributes from around the world have poured in to honor Chiume’s legacy. The South African government expressed its condolences, stating, “Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award-winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered.” Nigerian actress Kate Henshaw also paid tribute, writing, “Rest in peace Mum Connie. You were deeply loved & appreciated.”

Chiume’s contributions to the entertainment industry, both in South Africa and globally, have left an indelible mark. She is survived by her four children—two sons and two daughters—who, like her countless fans, will carry forward her legacy.
