Mrs Brown’s Boys creator and star Brendan O’Carroll has apologised after making an offensive joke during rehearsals for the show’s upcoming Christmas specials. The joke, which implied a racial term, prompted the BBC to temporarily pause production after complaints from cast and crew.
O’Carroll, 69, acknowledged the mistake, calling it a “clumsy attempt” at humor while in character as Agnes Brown. “It backfired, and I deeply regret causing offense,” he said.
The BBC quickly launched an investigation but allowed rehearsals to resume after the actor’s apology. The Christmas and New Year specials will go ahead as scheduled, airing on BBC One and iPlayer. A BBC spokesperson reaffirmed the broadcaster’s commitment to opposing all forms of racism and ensuring respectful environments during production.
Despite ongoing criticism from some quarters, Mrs Brown’s Boys continues to be a hit with audiences, regularly drawing large viewership numbers during its festive specials. A new series of the BAFTA-winning sitcom is set to begin filming next year.
