Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, 54, was seriously injured in the early hours of Thursday morning during a knife attack at his Bandra residence in Mumbai. The incident, described by police as a failed robbery attempt, unfolded when an intruder entered Khan’s duplex apartment via the fire escape ladder.
According to a statement by household staff member Eliyama Philip, the intruder threatened her and the nanny in the child’s room, demanding 10 million rupees ($115,477; £94,511). A scuffle broke out during which Ms. Philip was injured, and the nanny fled the room. Khan and his wife, actress Kareena Kapoor, rushed to intervene after hearing the commotion. The attacker stabbed Khan multiple times before fleeing the scene using the fire escape.
Khan suffered injuries to his neck and thoracic spine. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where surgeons removed a knife fragment embedded near his spine and managed to prevent severe spinal damage. Dr. Nitin Dange confirmed that Khan is now stable and walking but will need rest and restricted movement for at least a week.
Police Deputy Commissioner Dixit Gadam revealed that CCTV footage shows the attacker escaping via the fire exit. Investigators suspect the intruder had prior knowledge of the apartment’s layout, suggesting possible inside assistance. Crime scene teams, including a sniffer dog unit, have been deployed, and workers previously engaged in polishing the floors at Khan’s residence are being questioned.
No valuables were reported stolen, but authorities believe theft was the likely motive. A suspect has been detained for questioning, though it is unclear if he is the intruder. The weapon used in the attack has not yet been recovered.
Khan, known for his award-winning performances in films such as Omkara (2006), is a prominent actor and producer. He is the son of former cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and legendary actress Sharmila Tagore. Fans and colleagues have expressed their relief at his recovery, with many calling for heightened security for the star and his family.
