Michael Newman, best known for his role as lifeguard Mike “Newmie” Newman on the hit TV show Baywatch, has passed away at the age of 68. Newman, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2006, died on Sunday, October 20, due to heart complications, according to his close friend and documentary filmmaker Matt Felker.
Newman was a beloved figure on Baywatch, appearing in 150 episodes from 1989 to 2001, second only to David Hasselhoff in the number of appearances. Uniquely, Newman was the only cast member who had been a real-life lifeguard before starring on the show. He balanced his acting career with his work as a full-time firefighter, continuing to serve as a firefighter until he retired after 25 years of service.
After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 50, Newman spoke openly about his battle with the disease in the Hulu docuseries After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun, directed by Felker. He described his daily struggles with Parkinson’s, including taking 10 medications a day, and how the illness had shifted his outlook on life. “I’m cherishing the days that I get to be on this earth with family and friends,” he said. “It’s not a run-through.”
Throughout his illness, Newman remained a symbol of resilience and optimism, continuing to raise awareness for Parkinson’s disease through his work with the Michael J. Fox Foundation. He spent his final years focusing on finding a cure and helping others navigate the challenges of the condition.
Newman is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sarah, their two adult children, Chris and Emily, and their 1-year-old granddaughter, Charlie. Prior to his diagnosis, the couple had planned to retire in Hawaii, where they had built their dream home near the filming location of Baywatch: Hawaii.
Michael Newman’s legacy as both a television icon and a courageous fighter against Parkinson’s will live on in the hearts of his fans, family, and those inspired by his strength.
