In a devastating loss, world-renowned ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince, 29, and her adoptive mother, Elaine DePrince, both passed away within 24 hours of each other. Michaela died suddenly on September 10, with no cause of death provided, while her mother tragically died the following day during a routine medical procedure.
Michaela DePrince’s journey from an orphanage in war-torn Sierra Leone to the global stage has inspired many. Orphaned at a young age, she was mistreated due to her vitiligo, a skin condition. Her life changed when she was adopted by Elaine and her husband, who encouraged her love for ballet. Michaela rose to international fame, performing with the Dutch National Ballet, Boston Ballet, and even in Beyoncé’s Lemonade.
Her family shared their grief in a statement: “Michaela touched lives worldwide. She was an inspiration who achieved her dreams against all odds.”
Michaela’s sister, Mia, expressed the pain of learning about both deaths so closely together, calling it an “unimaginable tragedy.”
The DePrince family has requested donations to War Child, a charity Michaela supported, in lieu of flowers. Michaela is survived by five sisters and two brothers, leaving behind a legacy of hope and perseverance.
