Australian actor and director Simon Baker, best known for his roles in The Mentalist and The Devil Wears Prada, has pleaded guilty to a charge of drink driving in New South Wales. The incident occurred in the early hours of July 20, when Baker was stopped near his home in the Byron Bay region for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Court documents reveal that the 55-year-old actor, who was not required to appear in person, admitted to the charge at Mullumbimby Court House on Wednesday. This is Baker’s first offence of this kind.
Baker, who grew up in northern New South Wales, rose to fame through classic Australian television shows such as Heartbreak High and A Country Practice before making a successful transition to Hollywood. His career highlights include an Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated performance in The Mentalist and a role in the Academy Award-winning film L.A. Confidential.
After two decades in Hollywood, Baker returned to Australia, where he continues to work in film and television, recently earning a Logie nomination for Best Lead Actor in the Netflix series Boy Swallows Universe.
Baker is scheduled to return to Mullumbimby Court on September 11 for sentencing.
