Actor James Van Der Beek, 47, has publicly shared his diagnosis of colorectal cancer, expressing optimism about his recovery journey. “I have colorectal cancer,” Van Der Beek told PEOPLE exclusively. “I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family. There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”
Despite the diagnosis, Van Der Beek has stayed active in his career. He recently appeared in an episode of Walker and is set to star in Sidelined: The QB and Me, a Tubi original film premiering on November 29. He also remains devoted to spending time with his family—his wife, Kimberly, and their six children—taking a memorable trip to Egypt earlier this year.
In addition to his acting work, Van Der Beek will participate in The Real Full Monty, a two-hour special premiering on December 9 to raise awareness for prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer screenings. The program, inspired by the 1997 film The Full Monty, will feature male celebrities like Taye Diggs, Chris Jones, and Bruno Tonioli, who will strip down to encourage conversations about cancer awareness and early detection.
Colorectal cancer, which forms in the colon or rectum, is one of the most common cancers in the U.S., with increased screenings improving early detection rates.
