The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, unveiled that the institution expends approximately N1.3 billion yearly on electricity, a financial commitment faced despite the university’s financial challenges. Prof. Egbewole made this revelation during an interactive session with the Unilorin Students’ Union Executive Committee members.
Highlighting the financial strain, the vice chancellor explained that the university’s monthly electricity expenses ranged between N120 million and N130 million, accumulating to an annual spending of N1.2 billion to N1.3 billion. He emphasized that this financial challenge persisted even as the university prioritized providing other critical services such as water, internet, laboratory and classroom equipment, health facilities, and various essential needs.
During the session, Prof. Egbewole expressed confidence in the leadership of the student union, believing in their ability to effectively convey the management’s vision to the student community. Stressing the importance of understanding the university’s vision for facilitating effective communication and collaboration, he encouraged responsible student unionism. The vice chancellor urged the student union leaders to establish a strong network among their peers.
Additionally, Prof. Egbewole reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating a more conducive environment for the success of the students. Emphasizing the sanctity of the academic calendar, he highlighted its significance for both students and the university’s management. “For us, our calendar is sacrosanct, and the more we adhere to it, the better for students and management,” he affirmed.
