The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi, has instructed the suspension of undergraduate school charges at UNICAL until further notice. This decision follows a student protest in response to recent adjustments in school fees.
In a statement issued by the University Registrar, Gabriel Egbe, it was emphasized that the university’s management, being receptive, has engaged constructively with the students and is working on resolving the matter.
The students who protested the hike in school charges earlier on Monday, noted that the economy was already too tough for Nigerians to cope with, as the increment would mean that some students would have to drop out of school.
The management of the institution in an earlier statement issued over the weekend by its Public Relations Officer, Effiong Eyo, said the increment was necessitated by the economic realities, and the need to maintain the academic standards which the University is known for.
The statement disclosed that the implementation of the hundred percent increment would take effect from the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.
