The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Kenechukwu Onwumelie, has verified the apprehension of two suspects involved in the kidnapping of Professor Godwin Emezue, a Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Abia State University Uturu (ABSU).
Professor Emezue was abducted on January 26, 2024, while refueling his vehicle at a filling station in Umuopara, Umuahia South LGA, near his home. The kidnappers seized his wife’s ATM card, forced him into a Lexus SUV, and drove off with him.
After spending 11 days in captivity, the deputy vice-chancellor was eventually released by the abductors.
The gang leader was apprehended at Lagos airport while attempting to board a flight to Turkey, as confirmed by Governor Otti and CP Kenechukwu Onwumelie.
“They are in our custody, two of the people concerned. Investigation is ongoing,” the police commissioner stated.
The state governor, Alex Otti, also confirmed the arrest while interacting with newsmen on Friday, stating that the leader of the gang was picked up at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos while trying to board a flight to Turkey.
Otti added that the second mastermind was arrested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
According to the Governor, the two had since been returned to Abia state to answer for their crimes, stating that the arrest was made possible by the efforts of Operation Crush, a joint security team set up by his administration which is yielding the desired results in rooting out criminals.
