Lead British International School in Abuja has closed its doors for three days amid widespread outcry over a bullying incident captured in a viral video. The footage depicts a female student, Namtira Bwala, being repeatedly slapped by another student, Maryam Hassan, prompting outrage on social media.
Following a press briefing attended by concerned parents, school management expressed its disapproval of the incident and initiated a thorough investigation. Abraham Ogunkambi, the Head of the school, assured the public that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness. The school has reached out to the victim and her family, offering support and counseling services.
In response to public demand for action, the school has pledged to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. Disciplinary measures will be imposed on the perpetrators, and a panel has been formed to investigate other allegations of bullying within the school.
Tensions escalated during a meeting when a parent confronted one of the students involved, leading to a physical altercation. Despite this, the school remains committed to addressing the issue and ensuring the well-being of its students.
The temporary closure aims to facilitate a comprehensive investigation and protect the school from potential repercussions. Meanwhile, the counseling unit continues to work with the victim to address the emotional and psychological impact of the incident.
