Walmart has issued a voluntary recall of 9,535 cases of its Great Value brand apple juice after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found elevated levels of inorganic arsenic in the product. The recall affects 8-ounce bottles sold in 25 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.
The recall, originally issued on August 15, was recently upgraded by the FDA to a Class II recall, meaning the product could potentially cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects, though the risk of serious harm is considered low. No illnesses or complaints have been reported so far.
The recalled apple juice, produced by Refresco Beverages US Inc., was sold in six-packs with a UPC code of 0-78742-29655-5 and has a “Best if used by” date of December 28, 2024.
Inorganic arsenic is a naturally occurring chemical that can enter the food supply through soil and water contamination. While it is impossible to completely eliminate arsenic from food, high levels can pose health risks, including nausea, vomiting, and long-term effects such as cancer.
Walmart has removed the affected product from its stores and is working with the supplier to address the issue. Consumers who purchased the recalled apple juice are advised to return it to the store for a refund.
