Serial rapist Nkosinathi Phakathi has been sentenced to 42 life terms in prison for his horrific crimes in South Africa, including 90 counts of rape, kidnapping, theft, and assault. His victims included children as young as nine, and many were attacked while traveling to or from school or work. Some were assaulted in their own homes after Phakathi pretended to be an electrician to gain entry.
Phakathi, who carried out his attacks between 2012 and 2021, also forced young boys to assault their female friends and made children watch his rapes. He was arrested in 2021 after being shot by police, which led to the loss of his leg.
The High Court also sentenced him to an additional 791 years in prison for his other crimes. Many of his victims were visibly emotional during the sentencing. Phakathi showed no remorse, and the court agreed he was beyond rehabilitation.
South Africa continues to struggle with high rates of violent crime, including rape and murder.
