South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile has recovered after briefly fainting while delivering a speech in Tzaneen, Limpopo province, on Saturday. The 62-year-old collapsed towards the end of his address at a ceremony marking the inauguration of a local traditional leader.
Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba, a medical doctor, was on-site and quickly assessed the situation. She explained that Mashatile had been affected by the heat but assured the public that he was in good health. “He is with his medical team and doing fine. There is no cause for concern,” Ramathuba said.
Mashatile’s spokesperson, Keith Khoza, also confirmed that the deputy president had recovered after receiving immediate medical attention and is expected to continue his duties as planned.
