Equatorial Guinea’s Vice-President, Teodoro Mangue, has announced strict measures against government officials following a scandal involving Baltasar Engonga, Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF). Engonga was arrested after authorities discovered over 400 sextapes in his office during an unrelated fraud investigation. The tapes reportedly feature Engonga with the wives of prominent figures, including relatives of high-ranking officials and ministers, sparking widespread controversy after leaks circulated on social media.
In response, Mangue has ordered the suspension of any officials found engaging in sexual relations within government offices. “The government will implement severe measures against such actions, which violate our Code of Conduct and Public Ethics Law,” he stated on social media. Mangue’s directive emphasizes a “zero-tolerance” policy toward behavior that damages public trust, further stating that the government will install surveillance cameras in official offices to ensure compliance.
The tapes, some reportedly recorded next to the national flag, are said to be consensual. However, the Attorney General highlighted potential public health risks due to the unprotected nature of these encounters and stressed the importance of a safe environment for victims to report any coercion.
Engonga, also known as “Bello,” has been a central figure in Equatorial Guinea’s public service scandal. Vice-President Mangue affirmed that moving forward, strict oversight and disciplinary actions will be enforced to maintain the integrity of the administration and protect the image of the nation.
