ECOWAS Court Rules Nigerian Government Guilty of Human Rights Abuses During #EndSARS Protests

The ECOWAS Community Court of Justice has delivered a verdict against the Nigerian government for human rights abuses during the #EndSARS protests in October 2020.

On Wednesday, July 10, the court concluded that the Nigerian government’s response, especially the use of excessive force at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, violated several international human rights standards. These violations include breaches of articles 1, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The court has ordered the Nigerian government to pay N2 million in compensation to each victim named in the suit.
