Cameroon’s President Paul Biya, who has held power for 42 years, plans to run for an eighth term in the 2026 presidential election. Biya, currently 91 years old, would be 93 at the time of the election, and if successful, would extend his presidency until the age of 100.
Biya’s decision to delay the election from 2025 to 2026, along with the postponement of parliamentary and municipal elections, has sparked outrage among opposition groups. Critics argue that these moves are designed to weaken opposition parties and secure another victory for Biya.
Having served as president since 1982 and previously as prime minister for seven years, Biya is Africa’s longest-serving head of state. His plan to remain in power has fueled concerns about the future of democracy in Cameroon, with many fearing that the election process will not be fair or transparent.
