Alex Ikwechegh

Nigerian House of Representatives member Alex Mascot Ikwechegh has been released on ₦500,000 bail after allegedly assaulting a Bolt driver during a dispute over a delivery in Abuja. The incident, captured in a viral video, has prompted public demands for accountability.

Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South, appeared in Kuje Magistrate Court, where Judge Abubakar Sai’id granted bail on the condition that he provide two local sureties with proof of residence. The lawmaker pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, abuse of office, and making threats against the driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.

According to reports, the altercation began when Abuwatseya, tasked with delivering an order for the lawmaker, requested payment upon arrival. A heated argument ensued, during which Ikwechegh allegedly slapped the driver and threatened him. In the video, Ikwechegh is heard saying, “I am a member of the House of Reps… call the Inspector General of Police.” His actions have sparked criticism online, with many Nigerians calling for justice and accountability for public officials.

The charges, filed by the Inspector General of Police, will be revisited in court on November 8. Commenting on the incident, security and ethics expert Dr. Bassey emphasized the need for psychological screenings and substance abuse tests for public office candidates to uphold legislative integrity. The House of Representatives has advised citizens to await the police investigation’s outcome.
