In response to the temporary medical leave of Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Major General Olufemi Oluyede as the Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). The appointment aims to maintain leadership continuity and operational stability in the Nigerian Army during Lagbaja’s absence.

Major General Oluyede, previously the Commander of the Infantry Corps in Jaji, Kaduna, brings a wealth of experience from over three decades of service. Commissioned in 1992, Oluyede has held critical command positions across the Nigerian Army, including as Platoon Commander, Company Commander, and Commandant of the Amphibious Training School. He has also led forces in key missions, including the ECOMOG peacekeeping mission in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and Operation HADIN KAI in the Northeast.

In an official statement, presidential adviser Bayo Onanuga confirmed that Oluyede’s role is temporary until Lagbaja, currently undergoing medical treatment abroad, can resume. The Army has reassured the public that Lagbaja’s leave is for health reasons only, urging calm amid unfounded rumors regarding his condition.

This leadership shift occurs as the Army faces rising security challenges across Nigeria, with Oluyede’s appointment underscoring Tinubu’s commitment to a strong, stable military command structure.
