Nigerian Reps Member Alex Ikwechegh has publicly apologized after a viral video captured him verbally and physically assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, during a delivery dispute at his Abuja residence. The video, recorded by Abuwatseya on Sunday, quickly gained traction online, showing Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping the driver and making intimidating remarks.
The confrontation began when Abuwatseya requested that Ikwechegh come outside to collect his delivery. This request reportedly angered Ikwechegh, who, in the video, accused the driver of disrespect, issued verbal threats, and slapped him multiple times. Ikwechegh’s remarks included a warning that he could make the driver “disappear” without repercussions, prompting widespread public criticism.
In a formal apology, Ikwechegh acknowledged his behavior as “unacceptable” and expressed regret for falling short of public expectations. “As a representative, I am entrusted to act with respect and dignity. I sincerely apologize for my actions, which were out of line,” he said, further expressing regret to Abuwatseya and his constituents.
The MP also confirmed his cooperation with police investigations and his intent to seek professional counseling. “This has been a humbling reminder of the importance of self-control and respect,” Ikwechegh said. He added that he plans to participate in community service initiatives focused on fostering empathy and understanding.
The Nigerian House of Representatives referred the matter to its ethics committee for review, while Ikwechegh and Abuwatseya have since reached a resolution through alternative dispute resolution methods.
