World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Rolex Paris Masters due to an intestinal virus, tournament officials announced on Tuesday. The 23-year-old Italian, who recently clinched the top spot in the ATP year-end rankings for the first time, was forced to pull out after experiencing symptoms during his initial practice session in Paris.
In a press conference, Sinner expressed disappointment, stating, “It’s a tough decision, but I’m not ready to compete. We arrived early to prepare well, but after my first practice, I felt very weak. I’ve consulted with doctors, and although I feel slightly better, I’m not physically ready for this tournament.”
French player Arthur Cazaux will replace Sinner in the draw, taking a “lucky loser” spot to face either Ben Shelton or Corentin Moutet in the second round.
Sinner has had an impressive 2024 season, winning seven titles, including two Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and the US Open, as well as three Masters 1000 titles. His season finale is set to be the ATP Finals in Turin, held from November 10-17, where he will compete alongside the year’s top eight players. Following the ATP Finals, he is expected to represent Italy in the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, Spain.
“The main goal now is to fully recover and prepare for Turin,” Sinner said, underscoring his commitment to returning to form for the upcoming ATP Finals.
