The widow of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, born Ilerioluwa Aloba, has agreed to a DNA test to confirm the paternity of their son, Liam, in response to a request from Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba. The agreement follows a court dispute initiated by the late singer’s father, who filed a lawsuit seeking confirmation of Liam’s paternity.
Omowunmi Aloba, the widow, initially resisted the DNA request due to the emotional toll surrounding Mohbad’s passing, but she has since agreed to proceed with the test as part of a recent settlement reached outside the court. As per the terms, the DNA test will be conducted at two recognized medical facilities within Lagos or another mutually agreed location outside the state. Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, has consented to cover all expenses related to the testing, including sample collection, laboratory fees, and other associated costs.
A statement from the family’s legal team confirmed that both parties would uphold the terms, which the Magistrates Court officially adopted as a binding judgment. The court also assigned officers to supervise the DNA testing process to ensure transparency and reliability, while legal costs will be individually borne, except for the DNA-related expenses covered by Mr. Aloba.
The death of Mohbad at age 27 has sparked widespread public interest and controversy, prompting the Lagos State Police Command to initiate a special investigative team. The investigation has since led to several arrests and the exhumation of Mohbad’s body for autopsy. Despite these efforts, international observers and advocacy groups monitoring the case have raised concerns over delays and procedural barriers in the inquest, citing potential risks to justice and transparency.
Omowunmi’s decision to undergo the DNA test aims to address the family’s dispute over Liam’s paternity while respecting Mohbad’s legacy. In her statement, she expressed that this step was in the best interests of her son and her late husband’s memory.
