Rodri and Aitana Bonmati Win 2024 Ballon d’Or, Real Madrid Boycotts Ceremony

Rodri and Aitana Bonmati

Manchester City’s Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d’Or, claiming the award ahead of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham. Despite his recent ACL injury, Rodri’s standout performances helped Manchester City secure a fourth consecutive Premier League title and led Spain to a Euro 2024 victory, earning him the title of the tournament’s Best Player. In his speech, Rodri expressed gratitude to his family, team, and coach, acknowledging their crucial roles in his success.

Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati won her second consecutive Ballon d’Or for her key role in Barcelona’s La Liga and Champions League victories. Bonmati’s win extends Barcelona’s dominance in women’s football, with teammates Caroline Graham Hansen and Salma Paralluelo completing the top three.

The ceremony was marked by Real Madrid’s absence, as the club boycotted in protest over Vinicius Junior not receiving the top honor. Real Madrid expressed dissatisfaction with the award criteria, despite being named Men’s Club of the Year. Barcelona, in contrast, was awarded Women’s Club of the Year.

Notable awards also included Emi Martinez retaining the Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper after a strong season with Aston Villa and Argentina, while Barcelona’s Yamine Lamal received the Kopa Trophy as the best player under 21.
