Chelsea clinched a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with goals from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer marking another strong performance under coach Enzo Maresca.
Chelsea struck first in the 18th minute. Nicolas Jackson finished off a swift counterattack, set up by a clever pass from Cole Palmer and a perfect cross from Pedro Neto. The Blues controlled much of the first half with their energetic passing game, a far cry from their struggles in recent seasons. But Newcastle equalized in the 32nd minute, with Alexander Isak converting a cross from former Chelsea player Lewis Hall.
Barely a minute into the second half, Palmer restored Chelsea’s lead. Picking up a pass from Romeo Lavia near midfield, he sprinted to the edge of the box and unleashed a low, precise shot past Nick Pope, securing his seventh league goal of the season. Chelsea kept the momentum, coming close to a third goal as Neto’s header hit the post. Reece James, returning from injury, also delivered a solid defensive performance with several critical clearances.
Newcastle had a late chance to level when Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana misjudged a header, but Isak hesitated, allowing Moisés Caicedo to clear. Chelsea’s win briefly pushed them to fourth in the Premier League standings before Arsenal’s draw with Liverpool later on Sunday.
With five wins from nine matches, Chelsea sits in fifth place, while Newcastle, winless in five games, holds 12th.
