Mohamed Salah’s late goal rescued a 2-2 draw for Liverpool in a high-energy clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. Both teams, fighting to keep pace with Premier League leaders Manchester City, showcased resilience in a game marked by injuries and lead changes.
Arsenal, determined from the start, took an early lead when Bukayo Saka broke past Andy Robertson and fired home in the ninth minute. Saka’s goal, his 50th in the Premier League, brought the home crowd to its feet and underscored his importance following a recent injury. Liverpool responded quickly, with Virgil van Dijk heading in an equalizer from a Luis Díaz flick just nine minutes later, leveling the match at 1-1.
Arsenal regained the advantage before halftime when newcomer Mikel Merino headed in a free-kick delivered by Declan Rice. The goal, initially reviewed by VAR for offside, was ultimately upheld, and Arsenal entered the break with a 2-1 lead.
In the second half, Arsenal’s defensive lineup took a hit as Gabriel Magalhães was forced off due to injury, joining several teammates on the sidelines. Liverpool capitalized on this vulnerability, and in the 81st minute, Salah tapped in a low cross from Darwin Núñez, tying the game once more.
With this result, Liverpool remains in second place with 22 points, just one point behind Manchester City, while Arsenal moves into third with 18 points. Managers Mikel Arteta and Arne Slot both commended their squads’ efforts, especially given the injury setbacks and the intensity of the match.
Next, both teams will shift their focus to the League Cup midweek, with Arsenal set to visit Preston and Liverpool heading to Brighton.
